External Commercial Borrowings

External Commercial Borrowings are the loans availed by an Indian organization from a non-resident lender. These loans are funded by foreign commercial banks or lending institutions. The maturity period is an average of three years for these loans. However, these borrowings taken must conform to the norms of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).

To enable fresh investments, ECBs have proven to be a great instrument to raise funds from across borders. ECB’s aid Indian firms & organizations to benefit immensely from fresh investments.

Borrowings under ECB that can be obtained are: -

  •    Loans
  •    Securitized instruments (e.g. floating rate notes and fixed-rate bonds etc.)

  •    Debentures (excluding fully or compulsorily convertible debentures);
  •    Buyers’ credit/ Suppliers’ credit beyond 3 years;
  •    Rupee denominated bonds issued overseas (that can be privately held or issued through the public issue as per host country regulations);
  •    Foreign Currency Convertible Bonds (FCCBs);
  •    Financial Lease;
  •    Foreign Currency Exchangeable Bonds (FCEBs)
